Differentiated Instruction Professional Development
Gifted Education Seminars
The Illinois State Board of Education/ISBE has allocated funds to the ROEs to provide professional development to classroom teachers on differentiation instruction for the gifted and talented student. ISBE has designed a state-wide program called the Gifted Education Seminar that will be offered by ROEs during the 2009-2010 program year at minimal or no cost to teachers. This will likely be the only year that this will be available!
The goal of the training is for teachers to identify gifted and talented learners, address their diverse learning needs through differentiation instruction. Some of the training will be face-to-face and some will be independent, self-paced using DVD. Teachers will receive two books: Achieving Excellence Educating the Gifted and Talented by Frances A. Karnes and Kristen R. Stephens and Differentiation: Simplified, Realistic and Effective by Bertie Kingore and a DVD. Teachers will have the options of taking the Seminar for CPDUs or for graduate credit. (The graduate credit cost is an additional expense for the teacher.) The ROEs will be scheduling these Seminars at their sites and may also schedule them at the school districts during school in-service days. Information regarding the Gifted Education Seminars will be coming to your districts and schools. For additional information, please contact your ROE Gifted Coordinator:
