#9222 Special Education Eligibility Using RtI
This workshop will describe the ISBE criteria and process for determining special education elgibility within an RtI framwork and will provide practical case examples at elementary and secondary levels. The presenter will address some of the most frequently asked questions regarding special education eligibility using RtI. The workshop will also focus on training RtI coaches and teams who will be preparing staff in the application of RtI principles to the determination of eligibility for special education services. A major focus will be on the importance of implementing scientific research based practices at Tiers 1, 2, and 3 with high treatment integrity. When this occurs, entitlement decisions for SLD will be a relatively simple process. (This is a refresher of the session presented in April)

#9217 Co-Teaching and Differentiating Instruction in Inclusive Schools in the 21st Century
This is a two day presentation and we encourage teams consisting of at least a special education teacher and a general education teacher from the same building who are co-teaching together or who are interested in co-teaching to attend this workshop. Day 1: Dancing the Dance: Co-Teaching Strategies for Inclusive Classrooms. This session will focus on practical classroom applications to support students with disabilities in general education co-taught settings. The session will provide participants with: Useful strategies to successfully support students with mild to moderate disabilities in general education co-taught classrooms; practical techniques for establishing partnerships between general and special educators; User friendly resource materials for immediate use in your classroom; Real world, relevant and practical ideas, and videotaped examples of co-taught settings. Specific Topics Addressed: Foundations for building an inclusive climate across the school environment; grading students with special needs included in general classrooms; increasing planning time; using current research and effective practices at the secondary level; relevant and practical co-teaching strategies; techniques for building stronger partnerships between general and special educators; progress monitoring strategies based on current trends in assessing and grading secondary students with disabilities. Day 2: Differentiating instruction in Inclusive Schools in the 21st Century: What does your data show about the success of inclusion at all levels? You may or may not be surprised to learn that inclusion with the right culture, leadership, technology and support can be a driving force behind academic progress for ALL students. Discover common themes in successful schools and what changes can occur to ensure success for students academically and socially. This session will provide practical and common themes from successful schools and what changes must occur to ensure success for students with disabilities academically and socially into the 21st Century. This session will focus on practical applications at the school and classroom level to support students with disabilities in the general education setting. The session will provide participants with: Useful strategies to successfully support students with disabilities in general education classrooms. Innovations in technology to help level the field for students with disabilities; practical tools for establishing partnerships between general and special educators related to student learning and assessment; numerous websites that can be used to increase student engagement; quick and easy strategies to motivate low achieving students, strategies to promote social success among students; real world, relevant and practical ideas, and videotaped examples of inclusive settings, including tools for collaboration, assessment and universal design principals. Presenter: Dr. Lisa Dieker, PhD is a professor and Lockheed martin scholar at the University of Central Florida. She coordinates the doctoral program in special education and is director of the Lockheed martin mathematics and science academy. Her primary area of research focuses on collaboration between general and special education at the secondary level with a specific interest in the unique opportunities that exist in urban schools. She is the author of The Co-Teaching Lesson Plan book and featured presenter for two videos 7 Effective Strategies for secondary Inclusion and Winning Strategies for Inclusive Classrooms. She has also published numerous articles on reflective things, teacher assistance teams, co-teaching, virtual environments and secondary inclusion. Teams are encouraged to attend and for a team consisting of at least a special educator & general educator from the same building the cost will be $25.00 a person or team member.
