#11541 Makerspaces/Genius Hour

Two hot topics one workshop!!!

A makerspace is a place where students can gather to create, invent, tinker, explore and discover using a variety of tools and materials.” (Diana Rendina)Looking for a NEW idea? This maybe just what you are looking for- Come learn about the Maker Movement sweeping the educational world! This workshop is for those who are interested in what a Makerspace is and what it can look like within a school setting. A Makerspace can be simple or it can be elaborate.   Participants will explore Makerspaces and the research that supports them.

Genius hour is an instructional strategy that allows students to be creative and explore topics of their choice is a guided learning environment. Genius hour allows student choice in what they learn during a set period of time within a classroom environment.

The idea of Genius hour grew out of a practice used by Google. “Google, allows its engineers to spend 20% of their time to work on any pet project that they want.  The idea behind this is very simple.  Allow people to work on something that interest them, and productivity will go up.  Google’s policy has worked so well that it has been said that 50% of Google’s projects have been created during this creative time period.” (Chris Kesler, Genius Hour)

Resources and ideas will be shared for those who hope to start a Makerspace or a Genius Hour within their classroom or school.
