#11573 Depth of Knowledge

At the heart of our Illinois Learning Standards is the need to increase the level of rigor in our classrooms for ALL students. Norman Webb’s Depth of Knowledge (DOK) Framework has become one of the key tools educators can employ to analyze the cognitive demand (complexity) intended in our Standards, by our curricular activities, and our assessment tasks. The standards alone do not bring rigor to our classrooms. DOK categorizes tasks by different levels of cognitive expectations, or depth of knowledge, required to successfully complete a task.

During this workshop, we will explore:

  • What is DOK? Why use DOK in your classrooms?
  • Articulate the DOK Framework with content-specific descriptions for use in the classroom.
  • Achieve a common understanding of DOK and how it relates to Common Core/PARCC.
  • Provide examples/activities/strategies implementing DOK.
  • How to building COGNITIVE RIGOR in your classrooms.
