Regional Superintendent, Tammy L. Muerhoff, Message

Regional Superintendent’s Message Summer 2018

With daylight savings day officially passed, I am certain others are anticipating the warmer temperatures and Spring weather just as I am. Have a   wonderful remainder of the school year and a fantastic Summer.

Thank you for all you do for the students in your classrooms and in your school buildings!

Please note that there has been a change for the availability of licensure renewal in ELIS due to a significant number of types of licenses that are anticipated to renew at the conclusion of FY18.

Information from the Illinois State Board of Education follows:

Licensure Renewal Staggering:

This year, more than 200,000 educators will have licenses up for renewal. To put this number in perspective, approximately 60,000 educator licenses are normally up for renewal in a given year. The 2018 renewal year is much larger than usual because it is the first year that educators who were issued a substitute teaching license (SUB) or educator license with stipulations endorsed for paraprofessional (ELS-PARA) in the 2013 certificate-to-licensure exchange will be able to renew these licenses.

As this licensure renewal season is upon us, the ISBE is focused on educators having the best experience possible with the Educator Licensure Information System. To prevent the system from overloading due to increased user traffic, ISBE will stagger renewal periods for educators according to license type.

  • Educators who hold a PEL and ELS-CTE license, with an expiration of 6/30/2018, may renew beginning April 1, 2018.
  • Educators who hold an ELS-PARA license, with an expiration of 6/30/2018, may renew beginning April 15, 2018.
  • Educators who hold a SUB license, with an expiration of 6/30/2018, may renew beginning May 1, 2018.

The “renewal” link in educators’ action centers will not be activated until the dates identified above.

Middle Grade Endorsements

Any applications for 5-8 middle grade endorsements submitted on or after February 1, 2018 will be evaluated under the new middle grade requirements. Educators who already hold a middle school or junior high endorsement on their license will need to provide proof of 24 semester hours + applicable tests in order to add a middle grade endorsement. Educators holding a junior high endorsement will NOT have to complete a full or focused program in middle grades.
