Lights ON for Learning is a partnership among Rock Island County School Districts, Regional Office of Education and Community Partners.
Bright yellow banners hanging in many Rock Island County schools declaring them “Lights ON” Community Learning Centers. These banners mean the schools are working with community partners to offer extra programs and services to students, families and community members. At the heart of the Lights ON Community School concept is a simple idea: schools are not just places to teach children, but learning centers for the entire community because learning is life long.
Research has found that students attending Community Schools make significant gains in academic and non-academic achievement. Parents demonstrate a greater sense of responsibility for their children’s learning success. Community Schools enjoy stronger parent-teacher relationships, increased teacher satisfaction, a more positive school environment and greater community support.

The Lights ON for Learning Community Learning Centers are school sites where educators and community partners work in collaboration to provide students, families, and community members with life long learning experiences.

> Utilize physical, financial and human resources effectively and efficiently through community collaboration
Benefits of Community Schools:
• Significant gains by students in academic achievement
• -64% of students who attended Lights ON after school programs regularly increased reading grades
• -33% of Lights ON regular attendees increased Math grades
• 78% of parents believe that Lights ON has had a positive effect on their child’s over all behavior, and academic achievement and feeling involved int heir school
• 55% of parents of high school students surveyed, noted improvement in their teens decision making, life goals, and personal responsibilities
