#8174 See the Sound: Visual Phonics
Visual Phonics is a system of 45 hand signs and written symbols which helps to make the connection between sounds and letters clear and understandable so that written and spoken language are less confusing. Each hand sign suggests something about how a sound is made. Visual Phonics can be used in conjunction with any good reading, literacy, speech, or ESL program. By focusing first on the sounds of language, Visual Phonics captures the power of the language before it becomes a confusion of rules. Registration fee includes the cost of Visual Phonics binder. One grad credit is available for an additional $100 through Aurora University due the first day of class.

#8252 Effective Teaming in RTI
Response to intervention (RtI) is a new approach to ensure that all children meet state standards through a multiple-tier approach that delivers differentiated interventions to children based on their responsiveness to scientifically based instruction. This workshop will focus on a three tier model and the three types of teams required to effectively manage the Response-to-Intervention framework. The first type of team is the Building Leadership Team headed by the principal and charged with collecting, analyzing and interpreting building-wide data to appropriately implement a universal curriculum. The second type of team is the Grade Level Team that is responsible for collecting, analyzing and interpreting grade-level data to appropriately differentiate the curriculum based on screening data. The third team is the Student Assistance Team that is responsible for collecting, analyzing, and interpreting individual data to appropriately meet the needs of learners who are not responding to Tier 1 and Tier 2 interventions. All three teams must learn to use the Problem-Solving method to analyze the problem, identify scientifically-based interventions, implement the interventions and evaluate the results. Dr. James C. Raines received his Masters in Social Work from Columbia University and his Doctorate in Social Work from Loyola University. He has also been a Licensed Clinical Social Worker since 1991. He currently serves as Associate Professor for Illinois State University, as well as being the Midwest Representative to SSWAA.
